British Values & SMSC at Breightmet School, Bolton
At Breightmet School, our commitment to high‑quality SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) is central to the holistic education we provide. As part of this commitment, we actively promote the Fundamental British Values, as defined by the Department for Education:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and of those without faith
These values are woven throughout our curriculum, our culture, and our daily practice. Students encounter and explore British Values in meaningful, age‑appropriate ways that connect to their lived experiences and future aspirations.
Breightmet School, Bolton, we are committed to developing the whole child. Alongside our academic curriculum, we place strong emphasis on nurturing each student’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. This is central to our vision of creating confident, compassionate and responsible young people who can thrive in school and beyond.
Many areas of our curriculum naturally embed SMSC, offering rich opportunities for reflection, discussion, personal growth and deeper learning. Our approach ensures that students experience SMSC not as a standalone element, but as a consistent thread running through their daily school life.
SMSC is also promoted throughout the school day. Students engage with SMSC themes during form time, social times, assemblies, enrichment activities and celebration events, enabling them to explore ideas, values and experiences with both peers and trusted adults.
SMSC is promoted through a wide range of curriculum and enrichment activities, including:
- Religious Education
- Sport competitions and whole‑school events
- History and humanities
- Weekly themed events
- National and international recognition days
- Citizenship and community engagement
- Healthy Schools initiatives
- Study Skills lessons
- Form time activities
- Educational visits and off‑site learning
- Student Voice and leadership opportunities
- Our behaviour policy and restorative approaches
Through these experiences, students develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and responsibility—qualities that support them to become active, respectful and thoughtful members of their community.
